disquiet

Decadence is the total loss of unconsciousness, which is the very basis of life. Could it think, the heart would stop beating.

Dear Phil - front

Dear Phil, 1944

January 16, 2019

Pictured in this postcard is Staple Inn, a Tudor building that dates from 1585 on High Holborn street, that survived the Great Fire of London, and still stands.

On August 21st, 1944, the day the post office at Harpenden received this postcard, the Dumbarton Oaks Conference began, where the United Nations was to be formulated and negotiated amongst international leaders.

Around 74 years and 2 months later, I found myself walking Lamb's Conduit Street, a short walk from the Staple Inn. Bermondsey Square, where I would find this postcard the next day, is around 3 miles (around 5 kilometers) southeast from there.

Dear Phil - back

Dear Phil,

Many thanks for letter. I am on holidays staying in Harpenden. It is a rest from the flying bombs. My friend is with me and we are very comfortable.

Dad wrote last week, he seems to be busy but the rest will do him good. The weather has been lovely until today but perhaps it will do the garden good.

I expect I shall be in London when you have your next leave.

[at the top of the postcard]
Ring me up if you when you come to London.

Love,
Aunt Kate

Found at Bermondsey Antiques Market in London, open every Friday at 6am on Bermondsey Square.

Thanks to my friend Alice Lyzcia for reviewing my transcription.
